5 Fun Road Trip Activities for Students: App Edition

If you are about to embark on a long journey with your student group on a bus or motorcoach, there is one thing you will want to be sure you have: ACTIVITIES.

The hours on the road will fly by if your students are equipped with all the fun and educational apps/games they can get!

Let's face it, the license plate game can get dull, and with our society's new hyper-connectivity through cell phone apps there is much more you can do to occupy your time while on the road.

  1. Field Trip

    Android or iOS
    Battery Usage - High
Educational Value - History, Culture, Geography

This app is our top choice for any age group traveling. Instead of keeping your eyes peeled for the most interesting, historic, or educational roadside attractions or landmarks in cities you pass, you can simply check out this app and learn about each site from the bus. If you are near a place of importance, be it a restaurant or museum, a 'card' will pop up with detailed info about it. If you want to, you can even sign in with your Google Account, if you have one, and save favorite spots all along your trip.

  2. Scrabble

    Android or iOS
    Battery Usage - Medium
    Educational Value - Language, Spelling

There are several different options for this app, all depending on your device and preference for free or paid apps. Of course you probably already know of this game and how to play it in its original form, but putting it into an easy to use phone app makes for a really great way to pass the time and keep your brain active!

  3. Unblock Me

    Android or iOS
    Battery Usage - Medium
    Educational Value - Patterns, Logistics

This app is very similar to the physical sliding picture puzzle games from your childhood. The objective is to get the red tile off of the board by sliding other blocks out of the way, which may sound easy, but trust us, this game can get pretty darn tricky. This is an excellent way to pass the time!

  4. Google Earth

    Android or iOS
    Battery Usage - High
Educational Value - Geography, Spacial Relationships

If you have an android your phone will already have this app, though it is also available for iPhones now. This is a great app to just follow along with your journey, watching your route on the map. Learn about different landforms and attractions nearby without ever leaving the bus!

Tip** Remember to shut this app down when not in use, the background GPS date it runs will definitely drain your battery quickly.

  5. Trivia Crack

    Android or iOS
    Battery Usage - Medium
Educational Value - Art, History, Geography, Entertainment, Sports

This app is one of the most popular trivia games out there, and for good reason! Trivia Crack allows you to compete with friends or people from around the world and answer various questions regarding the arts, history, geography, entertainment, or sports. Your students can challenge each other on the bus to keep them busy, or you can even make it a group activity with the questions and answers read aloud so everyone gets a chance to learn!
