Inauguration - January 20th

If we're talking on land, then this one is most definitely the biggest things happening in the states in 2017, the monumental Presidential Inauguration. This event allows you to be a part of a history-making moment for the United States, a moment to be in the crowd as the President is sworn into office and also for exploring the countless sightseeing and learning opportunities while in D.C. This city is a super hub for travel, government, and educational activity, just be sure to save some time before or after the ceremony to see such popular landmarks as Arlington National Cemetery, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon Memorial, and/or the Smithsonian museums.

Rose Bowl - January 2nd  Since 1893 the Rose Bowl has been a huge annual event for sports fans across the United States, pitting the best college football teams in the nation. The Rose Bowl is a match of the two of the top teams in the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences. This is perhaps more geared toward high school and college-level personal interests and college affiliations. The location is at the official Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, and each year you can count on a great game, a chance to learn some college and sports history, local culture, and even great pre-game activities like tailgating and traditional Rose Queen and Royal Court appointments. This is always a great annual event option for student groups and sports junkies

Iditarod - February 28th - March 1st  If you have the means to get to Alaska, do it for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the "Last Great Race on Earth," the Alaska Iditarod. This man/animal versus nature type of race travels 1,000 miles of the most beautiful and also roughest terrain over Alaskan mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra, and coastal land. The conditions are brutal, yet thousands upon thousands of guests gather annually the first Saturday of March to see at least the start of the sometimes two-week historic trek from Anchorage to Nome. Each town along the path warmly (no pun intended) welcomes both guests and racers for the event, so feel free to make it a longer trip following the race if you please!
