August 1, 2014, is Colorado's 138th birthday, and the state is celebrating by offering free admission to 8 regional museums and a variety of activities throughout the weekend.
The museums listed are the Bryers-Evans House Museum, El Pueblo History Museum, Fort Garland Museum, Fort Vasquez Museum, Georgetown Loop Historic Mining, and Railroad Park, Healy House Museum and Dexter Cabin, Trinidad History Museum, and the Ute Indian Museum. These museums feature prominent Coloradoans' homes, an archeological excavation site, a fort once commanded by legendary Kit Carson, a piece of a mining town, a complete collection of Native American artifacts, a functioning mine shaft to ride, and much more!
The two-day event is a partnership between the History Colorado Center and Colorado Proud to celebrate Colorado’s admission to the Union as the 38th state in 1876. More information can be found here.
Other free activities going on throughout the state include helping build an adobe wall, cooking a cobbler in a Dutch oven, seeing a sluice mining demonstration, viewing performances of square dancing, American Indian dances, music, cowboy rope tricks, and dozens of other activities.
