Penguins at the Zoo

In Detroit, the zoo isn’t the only place where you’ll get to see Lions, but it certainly is one of the most fun and educational! The Detroit Zoo is one of this city's top attractions, a family-friendly and educational hotspot where you will see over 2400 animals, from aardvarks to zebras! The zoo is located just 2 miles north of the city limits, located on the corner of 10 Mile Road. First opened in 1928, this facility has had a lot of experience with animal behavior and conservation, creating several award-winning exhibits since then. Most notably in the zoo are the Great Apes of Harambee and the Arctic Ring of Life, plus the newest exhibit, the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.  Besides all the amazing information and animals here,  you will also find a mini railroad and carousel on site, a picnic area, and several shops and eateries throughout the 125 acres of the zoo.

Student groups, in particular, will absolutely love the Ford Education Center here, offering hands-on lessons that meet both state and Next Generation Science standards. There is a nearby Belle Isle Nature Zoo as well, with an interpretive trail, animals, and endless educational opportunities for kids, all for free! You can also opt in for a group tour, school tour, team building experience, or reward dinner or banquet (or picnic). Be sure to check out any ‘Today at the Zoo’ events, save time for the 4D theater or ice rink, and stop by Science on a Sphere. The new Polk Penguin exhibit is also the largest facility for penguins in the entire world, so you probably want to be sure you stop by there. There are 4 different gift shops on site, as well as 10 different eateries from a Detroit Popcorn Stand to the Safari Grill, plus Starbucks and Sweet Treats and even a Salad Stand!
