Nathaniel Russel House Museum
Built by wealthy merchant Nathaniel Russel in 1808, the Nathaniel Russel House is not only one of Charleston's most prized possessions but one of the most important neoclassical structures in the entire country. Located near High Battery in Downtown Charleston, the house museum is one of the most significant sites of history that the city has to offer. 9,600 square feet of historical importance, the house, and museum preserve and project the style of Nathaniel Russel's era and influence from the grand spiral staircase to the 19th-century furnishings and decor.
Walking through the stately house affords unique historical insight not only into the era but into the life of the house's original owner, his work and influence on the foundation of the city, and much more. Learn about slavery in the Russel house and in the South before the Civil War, discover the original kitchen exhibition that shows archaeological investigations under the house's foundation, explore the grandeur of the main house and learn more than you could have imagined in a tour of this simply stunning estate.
Tours cover both the house and the surrounding gardens, kept true to the 1808 preservation. The house is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am-5 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sundays.
