South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

— Science and Engineering since 1885 —

Research Thrives at Mines

From neutrino experiments a mile underground to collaborations with NASA, research at Mines brings talent, innovation, and determination to local, national and global initiatives.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is one of the regions leading science and engineering universities, boasting excellence in both! The school was founded in 1885 primarily for the instruction of mining, but today it has grown into something much, much more.

Your group will be able to tour the campus, talk to students, meet a professor, and experience life in Rapid City while here, whether you sign up for a guided group tour, set up a customized tour, or just come and look around campus yourselves. Middle school and high school groups have several different guided tour options, such as the General Department visit, talk with the Admission Counselor, or a 60-minute walk around campus with a Student Ambassador. Bring some lunch money and eat at the campus dining hall or any of the outdoor eateries to really experience campus life here, as well!

Well known for its STEM focus, small class sizes, great value, and excellent location within the Black Hills, this school is a no-brainer for most interested in mining and engineering. Here are all the different degrees you can earn while attending the school:
