The Grotto

The Grotto

The Grotto, or more officially known as the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is the Roman Catholic outdoor shrine and sanctuary located in the Madison South District of Portland, known for its impressive Pieta and serene botanical gardens. Here your group will enjoy 62 acres of manicured landscape that allows guests of any faith to take mindful walks and participate in meditation in a natural setting. The establishment strives to provide a welcoming presence and a beautiful environment conducive to peace, quiet, and spiritual inspiration.

Once there you will easily see why over 200,000 visitors from all over the world make the trek annually. The land itself gorgeously covered with fir trees, vibrant rhododendrons, and other appropriate and beautiful native plants. You will see the internationally renowned Our Lady’s Grotto, the rock cave carved into the base of a 110-foot cliff, as well as the life-size marble replica of Michelangelo's Pieta. The ministries and services provided here include counseling, education, spiritual direction, and liturgical celebration if you so choose to take part. Be sure to check if you happen to be here during any of the annual/holiday festivals, such as the popular Lights for Christmas show. Before you go you may want to stop by the Conference or Visitor’s Center as well, or perhaps just head over to the gift shop for that perfect souvenir!
